Den Gamle Major is a historic brown pub in Majorstuen, Oslo.

A pub with class and character, second to none. A social gathering place and the neighborhood restaurant of Oslo. With over 100 years of experience, it’s no wonder that Gamle Major has become a renowned pub and dining spot in Oslo. The pub boasts a rich selection of drinks and specializes in beer, aquavit, and whiskey. At Gamle Major, we are food enthusiasts known for flavorful gastropub dishes made with the finest ingredients. Our juicy burgers and excellent fish & chips are worth a visit on their own. The atmosphere is inspired by the best of English gastropubs—elegant and classic, informal and pleasant. A cozy venue in Oslo that everyone knows, so drop by!

The history of Gamle Major dates back to September 21, 1921, when the eatery and pub first opened its doors. Since then, Gamle Major has undergone several renovations and changes. Olav Thon Group took over the operation in 1984. At that time, it was a restaurant with white tablecloths and strict bar rules. Gamle Major underwent a final renovation in 2021 and now stands ready in new splendor. Today, Gamle Major is a laid-back and classic, elegant English pub inviting people into its warmth. The atmosphere is friendly, formally informal, and the gothic expression is evident in both the logo and style. Gamle Major is elegant, cozy, and atmospheric all at once. The interior features colorful walls, classic checkered tiles on the floor, and wood on the walls and ceiling. Sofas and seating areas are in cognac-colored leather, creating a sophisticated touch. The typical “booths” in the typical “pub look” provide an intimate and private atmosphere. All in all, a feeling of the best English pub. A pub that easily becomes your new regular spot and preferred choice of venue.

History

Of the old inventory at The Old Major, only the venerable illustrations on the walls remain. These were drawn by Olaf Leonard Gulbransson and were donated to Den Gamle Major by Ringnes Brewery many years ago.

Olaf Leonard Gulbransson, born in 1873, was a well-known caricaturist known for his illustrations of war heroes and the time he lived in. One of the characters he became known for was Major Von Knarren, who went to war over a barrel of Madeira. In Gamle Major pub, there are nine of Olaf Leonard Gulbransson’s illustrations today. They are displayed throughout the venue for viewing. These are so unique that they alone are worth a visit. The Major Von Knarren caricature also inspired the logo of Gamle Major. The amusing major still plays the leading role for Gamle Major, 100 years after it was drawn.

In addition to being a well-known brown pub in Oslo where you can enjoy good food, drinks, and gather with friends, Den Gamle Major is a popular nightlife spot. At Gamle Major, we excel at afterwork, Fridays, and weekends. Every weekend, we turn up the volume, let loose, and dance the night away. Our DJs ensure a great atmosphere well into the late hours. Ready, set, weekend!
